Des Moines uses shootout to best Muskegon, 3-2 (2-1 SO)
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Des Moines Buccaneers defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).
The shootout featured six attempts between both teams. Muskegon got a shootout goal from Rasmus Bengtsson. Des Moines' other shootout goal was scored by Luke Voltin.The Buccaneers stifled the Lumberjacks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. By firing 35 shots on goal, Des Moines exceeded the 29.2 shots it averages per game this year.
The Buccaneers were helped by Seth Adams, who grabbed one goal. Adams scored 3:52 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Des Moines. Max Birkinbine picked up the assist. Joseph Gambardella also scored for Des Moines. More assists for Des Moines came via James Roll and Trent Samuels-Thomas, who each chipped in one.
Des Moines was unable to stop Muskegon from sending pucks towards the net, and the Lumberjacks eventually piled up 49 shots on goal.
Muskegon was helped by Ben Foster, who finished with one goal. Foster scored 19:09 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Chad McDonald provided the assist. Muskegon also got a goal from Campbell Elyuik as well. In addition, Muskegon received assists from Bengtsson, Carter Foguth, and Frederik Tiffels, who contributed one a piece.
Billy Christopoulos rejected 47 shots on goal for the Buccaneers. Des Moines incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Kevin Lindskoug recorded 32 saves for the Lumberjacks. Muskegon incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
